John Cranko (1927–1973), a South African dancer and choreographer and a major figure of the 20th century, transformed the Stuttgart Ballet into a world-class company. As a mentor to Kylián, Neumeier, and Forsythe, he profoundly influenced the international choreographic landscape. Born on August 15, 1927, in Rustenburg, South Africa, John Cranko grew up in a family with an appreciation for the arts. As a child, he staged puppet shows before turning his attention to dance. Trained at the University of Cape Town under Dulcie Howes, he displayed exceptional talent from an early age; at just 18, he created a ballet based on Stravinsky’s *The Soldier’s Tale* (*L’Histoire du soldat*), already demonstrating his affinity for compelling narratives and dramaturgy.
